Slicing up a clip into smaller portions

There is something wrong with my workflow and I can't figure out what it is.

I have an 8 minute clip that I am putting into the Source monitor. I set the in point and the out points, I play it back a couple of times between those two points to get it just right, then I pull it down to the Project panel and rename it. When I first do that, two clips have the same name, the original, and the new, shorter clip. I can't always tell which is which. Why are there two clips with the same in and out points. Why doesn't the original clip keep it's original in and out points?

Then, I do this and I go back and realize I now have two clips with the name name that is not the name of the original file. I can't seem to figure out what's happening.

I know better than to throw a question up here without enough information, but perhaps if I just knew how other people create clips in a bin that are subsets of the larger clip, it would put me on the right path. Just point me to a tutorial if you can, that would be fine. As you can tell, I am a bit frustrated and irritated at the moment.

Edit: One piece of additional information. I sort in the bin by the in point to help keep track of where I am.
