Animating a straight line outwards from its center?

Hi there,

I'm working on an animated logo for a trailer and want to create a straight line (between two lines of text) that begins invisibly in the middle then expands horizantally in both directions until the size of the line matches the text above and below.

The closest video example I can find would be in the trailer for The Thin Red Line (at 2:33) but I would like to find out how to do it in the fashion that I have described rather than the line simply coming in from one side http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LCmlOhsIwBk

At present I've done a decent job by just keyframing the line's scale, though the downside of this is that the line doesn't become visible as soon as it starts expanding and can only start to be seen when it is about half size onwards

If anyone has any ideas on how I can accomplish this I'd really appreciate to know how it can be done!

Many thanks...
