How to make Premiere 5.5 stabile?

PROBLEM:

Premiere 5.5 crashes spontaneously. Could be on import, when cutting, or watching the source feed. Doesn't matter. Sometimes it works with the footage for up to 5 min, sometimes it crashes immediately on load.

WHAT I'M DOING:

The files I'm editing have been converted over from AVIs (which Adobe seems to reject) to MP4 with the H.264 compression. The conversation was nearly loss-less, with no changes to frame rates, aspect, audio channels, nothing. Just weeding out whatever codec/container Adobe seems to reject.  I have seen that the Media Cache files are always ever-increasing. With only 2 GB of footage in the timeline, the cache is over 40 GB (most of the files already being DELETED from the timeline). "Cleaning" the Cache does not remove the files, either. Adobe just keeps swelling up like a balloon. However, this does not affect my system as it was designed to be idiotic-program-proof. However, it's still crashing. The system is never close to overheating, overclocking, or filling up on RAM. All hardware is running perfectly. Since I'm used to FCP 7, I'm used to editing unrendered files on the fly, so most of the footage is unrendered at any given time. One file in particular, whose presence increased the rate of crashing to an absurd amount, has 6 audio channels (so, 6 tracks). Can Adobe even handle more than 2? (and if not, why are more than 2 tracks available?)

I've been editing on FCP 7 on Macs for years, knowing Premiere 4 and below to only be handle up to about maybe 2 MBs worth of footage before crashing. I was tricked into buying PP 5.5 for my PC, being told it had finally advanced up to par with FPC 7. I see now that was a gross exaggeration, however I need to make this program stable to satisfy a few outstanding contracts.

SYTEM SPECS:

Win7 Ultimate 64-bit

Intel i5 CPU

16GB Memory

Nvidia GTX 560ti GPU

128GB SSD (for OS and programs)

1TB SATA (scratch disc and media)

With the exception of paying more money to Adobe, is there any way I can make my system stabile enough to handle the morbid obesity of Adobe Premiere 5.5?
